Summer Heat

July 27th, 2010, 4:27 pm by

Want a chance to play firefighter? The Colorado Spring Fire Dept. offers a program for young women to see what opportunities are available in the fire dept and other public services. Check out Bryan’s gallery of the day’s activities.

Millie Harrison, left, Alex Jakusovszky, Missy Uveges and Kim Wisham have a fun moment after completing a search and rescue drill during Summer Heat 2010. The annual program is for girls between the ages of 15-19. The mission of the program is to show that opportunities exist for women in the fire service and other public services. During the week long sessions, the girls will get educated in safety, fitness, nutrition and have an understanding of the rigors and physical requirements of a firefighter. At the completion of the camp they will become CPR certified. This summer 22 girls took part in the session. (The Gazette, Bryan Oller)

Wakeboarding on Prospect Lake

Seems pretty crazy that they would do a Pro Wakeboarding event on Prospect Lake. But they did. Kevin got some great stuff of the pros doing their tricks. Check out his photo gallery.

Kissing Camels

July 19th, 2010, 11:06 am by

After a frustrating night of trying to make pictures at the rodeo, Bryan found another way to be creative. Something just peaceful about it don’t you think.

The stars, including those that make up the Big Dipper formation, sparkle in the night sky as the Kissing Camels rock formation stands out during a warm evening in the Garden of the Gods on Friday, July 16, 2010. (The Gazette, Bryan Oller)

In Jacks Valley

July 16th, 2010, 1:50 pm by

Every summer a new class of cadets, doolies, make the march to Jacks Valley to spend  a few weeks doing basic training. The Class of 2014 was no different and marched off last Sunday. Anthony photographed the day they reported to the academy and wanted to check out what happens in Jacks Valley.

Mutton From Mutton Leaves Mutton

July 15th, 2010, 10:13 pm by

Today was the second day of the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo and one of the more interesting things to photograph has got to be Mutton Bustin’, otherwise known as kids holding on for dear life while riding a sheep.  Basically kids show up a few hours before the rodeo with five dollars and a little encouragement from mom and dad.  Mom and dad then sign a release allowing the kids to try and earn one of eight spots to ride a sheep during the main event inside the arena.  Suffering through a few scrapes, tears and possibly a little mental scarring they are rewarded with a giant trophy, some as tall as the kids themselves.  There’s something special about watching a four-year-old be brave enough to do something that dangerous.  But it sure makes for some photos!

Ryana Lyn, 6, of Colorado Springs loses a pink shoe as she gets dumped by a sheep while trying out for a round of Mutton Bustin'. Kids lined up underneath a tent and outside the Norris-Penrose Event Center on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 for their chance to compete in the Mutton Bustin' Event during the 70th annual Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo. The top qualifiers get to ride nightly. Each day of the rodeo kids can sign up for their chance to win a chance to ride in the rodeo's daily performance through Saturday. (Bryan Oller, The Gazette)

Climbing rocks

July 15th, 2010, 4:43 pm by

Anthony got to spend the day playing the rocks as several young  boys learned how to climb in  day-long class of rock climbing Thursday in North Cheyenne Canon Park. Guides Joe Groshong and Bruce Hamilton of CityRock led the clinic. Kids took turns learning and practicing the basics of rock climbing, including knots, safety equipment and belay systems.  See more of the fun in Anthony’s gallery.
