Homeless

homeless camps

A pretty big undertaking by the newsroom staff. Several reporters and photographer headed out and spent some time in the  camps along the creeks visiting with the homeless. Many of them told us their stories.

Bryan and Jerilee also spent some time putting two of these stories into audio/slide shows.

A Conversation with Miss Kitty and Andy and Charlene.  Also here is a slideshow of more work.

Big Game

Rampart beats Fountain-Fort Carson in OT.

High school sports is one of my favorite things. Often the game is routine, but the atmosphere and the effort of the players is always fun. Last night the game was tied at the buzzer with a three-pointer by FFC, with the Rams winning in overtime. I shot the first three quarters and most of the fourth with two SB 800s lighting the near end of the court. That got me good light to about mid-court. With about a minute to go in regulation I shut off the lights and shot available light, letting me cover the whole court, in case the key play or celebration happened beyond the reach of my lights.

Cheesy Conan O’Brien

January 24th, 2010, 6:26 pm by

Fall photo intern Mariah Tauger shot these photos of Colorado Springs Artist Jason Baalman creating a portrait of Conan O’Brien completely out of Cheetos. The portrait was supposed to be revealed to the host on “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien” but became a victim of the late night wars on NBC. Incredible work Jason and nice job Mariah.conan-blog

A great photo by L.A. Times photographer Rick Loomis  capturing  the rescue of Daniel Woolley of Colorado Spring being pulled from the rubble of the Hotel Montana in Port-Au-Prince. Woolley a programmer with Compassion International, spent 65 hours pinned under the rubble following the earthquake in Haiti. Loomis was a photo intern at the Gazette in the late 1980s.

Haiti

The images from Haiti are just jaw-dropping. The devastation to the people and to the country are immense and hard to grasp. One of the staff remarked , “I just saw a photo of the Hotel Montana in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti reduced to a pile of rubble and dust with more than 200 people trapped or dead inside. I stayed in this hotel for an assignment in Haiti a few years ago. My stomach just turned remembering some of the people who worked there.”

More photo coverage may be seen here.
